ABOHAV SYNAGOGUE

ABOHAV SYNAGOGUE

The most imposing of Tzfat's old synagogue. Its central dome, supported on 4 wide columns, is decorated with symbolic murals. It is named for the 15th century Spanish rabbi Yitzhak Abohav. His disciples, one of whom was Ya'acov Berav, immigrated to Tzfat and brought with them a Torah scroll reputedly written by Abohav. This scroll is said to have secret powers and the elders of Tzfat believe that it protected the synagogue's southern wall during the catastrophic earthquake of 1837, leaving the holy arks undamaged. The synagogue has recently undergone major restoration work.
